ISBN 1 86940 2065. In this riveting and well researched account of the remarkable life and works of Dr Alice Bush, FRACP, Paediatrician, are found innumerable references to influential people and events of great interest to the Paediatric Society of New Zealand. For example: “In 1946 she, Sammy Lundbrook and Elizabeth Hughes had contributed the organising committee that established the Paediatric Society of New Zealand. Over the decade, principally because paediatricians were so thin on the ground, the executive remained in Auckland while membership was extended to any practitioner interested. The Society’s aims were wide-ranging, concerned not only with sick but also with well children, and not just with the child’s body but also its psyche. A postgraduate educational programme was soon underway but establishing a place within child health structures was more of a problem, since the envisaged role was one of leadership and there were already established players in the field. Relations with the Plunket Society were eased by the fact that Plunket’s medical directors, originally Helen Deem and, after her death, Neil Begg, also took a leading part in Paediatric Society affairs. Moreover, Plunket was a quasi-charitable, voluntary body whose lay membership welcomed the leadership of medical professionals. The state-run Health Department, with its school doctors, public health nurses and preschool clinics, was to prove more troublesome”. The book is rich with historical detail. Other paediatricians who are included in the narrative are: Dr David Becroft Dr Ron Caughey Dr Keitha Farmer Dr Grahame Fox Dr Alison Hunter Dr Jim Methven Professor Jim Watt Professor John Werry Alice was passionate about many professional developments including establishing academic paediatrics, the development of a children’s hospital, and family planning. Publications

The Paediatric Society advocates for children on all issues related to their health at a local, regional and national level. By working as a coordinated national network of health professionals the Society creates publications for the benefit of people providing health services to children and young people.  This includes providing information to the public of New Zealand on all matters that concern the health and welfare of children, and advancing public education and awareness of the science and practice of paediatrics, child health and welfare of children.
