PSNZ's Eczema Clinical Network has recently highlighted a critical issue identified by Medsafe regarding two skin creams reportedly used by many families affected by eczema.
The creams in question are being recalled due to the undeclared presence of a potent steroid, fluocinonide, which is not approved for use in Aotearoa. This steroid can cause severe side effects, especially in children.
Network Chair, Dr Angela Craig, says, "The creams are advertised as "your daily skin moisturiser." They are reported to contain no steroids and to be FDA-approved. This advertising is obviously reassuring, so many whānau have been using it as a moisturiser on their children continuously for months on end."
She adds, "Many health professionals working in eczema care have been surprised by the seemingly miraculous results from "just a moisturiser". This led to the question of whether it contained something in addition to the ingredients listed. My understanding is that a number of our nursing colleagues raised this question repeatedly, leading to the testing which showed the steroid.
➡ Key Details:
- Products Affected: NaturaCoco Moisturising Cream and Dok Apo Moisturiser Soothing Cream. Full details on the recall can be found here.
- Origin: These products are manufactured in the Philippines and advertised as containing ingredients like coconut milk, collagen, and vitamin E, but no steroids.
- Concerns: Many healthcare professionals were initially puzzled by the creams' highly effective results, which led to further investigations revealing the hidden steroid.
➡ Health Advice for Families:
- Immediate Action: If your child has been using these creams and exhibits symptoms like drowsiness, vomiting, or abdominal pain, seek medical help immediately.
- Long-Term Use: For those who have used these creams long-term, stopping suddenly may lead to rebound eczema. Please consult with your healthcare provider for appropriate management and potential tapering with other treatments.
This situation reminds us of the importance of vigilance in product choices and the value of regulatory oversight for safety. Let's stay informed and safe.
