We’re proud to share the publication of a new study led by PSNZ Diabetes Reference Group member Rita Sigley:
“Psychological and self-care outcomes for children and adolescents living with type 1 diabetes and their caregivers attending diabetes camp” (Diabetic Medicine, 2025).

This mixed-methods research adds weight to what many in the diabetes community have long known — that diabetes camps are more than just a fun break; they can deliver real and lasting benefits for both tamariki and their caregivers.

Key findings include:

  • Significant improvements in caregiver self-efficacy, distress, and quality of life, lasting up to six months post-camp

  • Reduced isolation and overidentification in young people attending camp

  • High acceptability and strong qualitative feedback from both tamariki and whānau

  • A call for greater cultural inclusivity and accessibility to ensure diabetes camps are equitable and welcoming for all
