PSNZ has submitted feedback on the Draft New Zealand Disability Strategy 2026-2030, following extensive consultation with our clinical networks.
Our submission supports the strategy's foundation while highlighting opportunities to strengthen outcomes for New Zealand's 98,000 disabled children.
Key recommendations focus on:
- Implementation and measurement frameworks that track real impact
- Child-specific approaches recognising unique developmental needs
- Health system reforms, including needs-based service access
- Evidence-based interventions proven effective internationally
- Stronger coordination between health and education services
The submission reflects insights from clinicians working daily with disabled children and their whānau, including specific recommendations on diagnostic gatekeeping, early intervention, and workforce development.
We appreciate Whaikaha's comprehensive consultation process and look forward to partnering in the strategy's implementation to achieve meaningful improvements for disabled children and their families.
