Success Stories: Strengthening Paediatric Palliative Care Practice in Aotearoa

5 June 2025

This year, our Paediatric Palliative Care Network has hosted four powerful education forums, each offering practical tools, deep insights, and heart-led inspiration for clinicians across Aotearoa:

  • Truth Telling with Kathryn Mannix reminded us of the value of silence, compassion, and curiosity in end-of-life conversations.
  • The Power of the River with Ellyn Proffit introduced the Te Awa metaphor — helping rangatahi lead their own care journeys.
  • After Death with Janet Mikkelsen shared practical, culturally respectful ways to support families through bereavement.
  • Ka whai awa, ka whai ara showcased new co-designed resources to guide and support rangatahi with serious illness, grounded in partnership, equity, and the lived experiences of young people.

All four sessions received overwhelmingly positive feedback. Attendees described them as “empowering,” “inspiring,” “immediately useful,” and “a gift to our practice.”

We’re proud to partner with Health Hub, who facilitate and produces these free online sessions, ensuring rural and regional providers have equal access. We also extend our thanks to Stephen Parkinson (True Colours), who facilitates each forum with care and insight.
