A new Australasian guideline on periprocedural management of children and adolescents with diabetes mellitus is now available on the Starship website.
It is based on recently published research and has been co-developed by NZPES, ANZSPED, SPANZA, consumer representatives, and members of our Clinical Network for Children and Young People with Diabetes.
The guideline:
- Covers both type 1 and type 2 diabetes across elective and emergency, minor and major procedures
- Provides practical advice on the use of CGM, insulin pumps, injections and IV insulin, including target glucose ranges and monitoring frequency
- Includes clear guidance on fasting, IV fluids, and management of hypoglycaemia and hyperglycaemia
- Offers checklists and flow diagrams to support shared planning with whānau and the wider multidisciplinary team
Please read the guideline, share it with perioperative teams, and consider how it can be embedded into local protocols and pre-admission processes.
Well done to everyone involved in this important piece of work 👏
