Neurodevelopment Network - Lunch & Learn NZ Series [14 April ]

Early Detection of Cerebral Palsy in Aotearoa New Zealand: Neurodevelopment Network Lunch & Learn

The New Zealand Child & Youth Clinical Networks' Neurodevelopment Clinical Network is hosting a Lunch & Learn session on Tuesday, 14 April 2026, featuring a presentation on early identification of Cerebral Palsy (CP) in Aotearoa New Zealand.

Dr. Angelica Allermo Fletcher, Neonatologist, will present findings from the PĒPI ARC study, Partnering Early to Provide for Infants at Risk of Cerebral Palsy, which explored whether early CP assessment can be implemented equitably across New Zealand, regardless of an infant's ethnicity or place of residence.

Every third day, a child who will later be diagnosed with CP is born in New Zealand, and many of these infants have risk factors that are detectable from, or soon after, birth. By combining neuroimaging, Prechtl's General Movement Assessments (GMA), and the Hammersmith Infant Neurological Examination (HINE), a diagnosis can be made before six months of age, corrected for prematurity.

Dr. Allermo Fletcher will share the background to the PĒPI ARC study and present its key findings. The session will be followed by a knowledge translation session in May.

The session runs from 12pm to 12:30pm and is hosted on Microsoft Teams.
