Submission: PSNZ opposes Definitions of Woman and Man Amendment Bill

PSNZ has released a position statement opposing the Legislation (Definitions of Woman and Man) Amendment Bill, warning that the Bill as currently drafted could cause measurable harm to a vulnerable population of rangatahi already at heightened risk of poor mental health outcomes.

PSNZ raises particular concern for transgender, non-binary, and intersex young people, arguing the Bill's binary definition of sex fails to reflect biological reality and risks creating a hostile legal environment that undermines the sense of safety many of these young people already struggle to find.

The Society is calling on the Select Committee to decline the Bill in its current form and instead prioritise the Law Commission's Ia Tangata recommendations, alongside genuine consultation with affected communities and health professionals.
