PSNZ has written in support of Pfizer's application for priority assessment of Abrysvo, a maternal RSV vaccine, by Medsafe.
The submission, originally submitted in April 2026, highlights the significant and inequitable burden of RSV-related bronchiolitis on infants in Aotearoa, particularly Māori and Pacific tamariki, and notes that New Zealand currently lacks any licensed RSV preventive product despite comparable countries like Australia and Chile already offering protection.
PSNZ says Medsafe registration is an essential first step toward Pharmac (letter subsequently submitted to Pharmac), considering funded access, and is urging that both maternal vaccination and the monoclonal antibody nirsevimab be progressed as a matter of urgency.
